The novel is set in Bar Harbor, Maine, on Mount Desert Island. Wonderful illustrations of the island accompany the story.

Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) was an American novelist born in Italy who was educated in New Hampshire, at Cambridge, in Heidelberg, and in Rome. He is known for fantastical stories, including supernatural fiction. Several of his books were made into early cinematic productions.
