R. Andre (1834-1907 is as interesting as the illustrator of the book. An Englishman, born William Roger Snow, he used the pseudonym Clifford Merson after a desertion from the British Army and his wife. After a divorce he reinvented himself as R. Andre and began a professional association with the children's author, Juliana Ewing, until her death. His career flourished and he later remarried and settled down as a successful illustrator.
