The author, Parker Gillmore (1835-1900) was a Scottish author, world traveler, and big game hunter with experience in India, Africa, China and North America. He served in the British Army during the Crimean War. The embossed ownership stamp on the free-front endpaper was for Smith’s, a high-end British bookseller.
