The second issue of Morse’s school geography book (the first was released in 1844) features a detailed look at the United States and the world in the mid-19th century. Of note, Texas was voted into statehood on December 29, 1845, and was not yet a state as of this printing. Texas is absent from the map of the United States and is shown with one of its alternative shapes on the map of Mexico. The map of North America pictures Texas as an independent nation. The map of Maine shows the northwestern boundary dispute not yet resolved. A wonderful reminder of how the United States grew and fit into a changing world.
