An early elementary learning-to-read book featuring Baby Ray. The Johnson Publishing Company was founded in Virginia in 1876 as a school book publisher for the former Confederate States. Rarely were its textbooks sold outside the Southern states.

The title page lists the authors’ credentials. Sarah Withers was a principal of elementary grades and a critic teacher at the Winthrop Normal and Industrial College in Rock Hill, S.C. Hetty S. Browne was an extension worker in rural school practice at the Winthrop Normal and Industrial College. William Knox Tate was a professor of rural education at the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee.
