The author, Mary Raymond Shipman Andrews (1860-1936), was an American writer of children’s fiction and some biography. This historically based story of Abraham Lincoln first appeared in Scribner’s Magazine in July 1906. Historians have taken issue with some of its content as romantic and not accurate.
