Cloth Folder of Women’s Embroidered Collar & Cuffs, c. 1880-1910

No place identified: c. 1880-1910. Ephemera no binding. [NEEDLE ARTS] [HOME ARTS] [WOMEN’S FASHION]. A lovely 19th and early 20th-century collection of women’s dress collars and cuffs contained within a padded cream-colored folder (13 ¾” x 5 ¼”), printed with roses, and lined. The collars were meant to be held in the folder by pale blue silk satin ribbons, most of which remain. There are a total of 55 pieces including twelve (12) pairs of detachable collars and matching cuffs, fourteen (14) single collars, two (2) pairs of cuffs, and one (1) single cuff lacking its mate. The collars and cuffs are starched, some are hand-sewn and embroidered, and some are machine-made. Most of the pieces appear to be made of organdy, a thinly woven cotton fabric, but some may be made of organza fabric made of silk with a fine weave. Only one collar and cuff set bears a commercial label (“Corliss Trademark”) on the collar band. A few have minute holes and some are stained with age. The collection as a whole presents a picture of women’s wear from this period. Very good. Item #1663
