Lovely illustrations accompany the retelling of four Hans Christian Andersen’s (1805-1875) stories for children: The Ugly Duckling, The Fir Tree, The Tinder Box, and The Snow Queen. The dating of the book is based on the existence of the H.M.Caldwell Company from 1896-1914.
The Villafield Press in Glasgow was established by University of Glasgow printer, Andrew Duncan, in 1818 when the University could no longer house the new press. Duncan resigned from his post at the University in 1826. He came from a family of booksellers and stationers and, later joined by his son, printed books and material for which he felt he had customers. He introduced stereotyping and the Columbian Press, a hand-operated press especially favored by printmakers, to Glasgow. The Special Collections Library at Glasgow University.
