Twenty-four long rhyming poems translated by “Cousin Fannie.” Fannie’s name appears as the author of several of the children’s books published by Phillips, Sampson & Co of Boston in the mid-19th century. The accompanying illustrations are engraved silhouette scherenschnitte-style (a German style of paper cutting) pictorials of people and animals at work and play. The first two verses of the first poem allude to the art technique.
“Welcome dear children all again!
Soothed has been many an hour’s pain,
When rhymes I’ve made, and pictures too
Thinking the long day still of you
Then come; away with all your fears,
And take the pictures from the shears –
The ugly owl, the Easter hare,
And long-nosed Caspar standing there”.
