First published in 1855, the Song of Hiawatha, about the love of an Native American Ojibwe named Hiawatha for Minnehaha, a woman from the Dakota tribe. Longfellow had a friendship with an Ojibwe chief who would visit at his home and maintained that the inspiration was from one of their legends.
