A war time (WWII) novel by German author, Seghers, warns of the danger of the Nazis and totalitarianism. Having escaped from a concentration camp, the prisoners flee across Germany trying to escape the Nazis searching for them. Back at the camp, seven trees are cut in anticipation of the return of the prisoners so they may be tortured.
